4.  Did you always think public relations was more female-driven than other media industries?

YES. Approx 80% of my program was female, and going into the workplace in my entirety I worked with one other PR professional that was male.

5. What inspired you to get into the field of media?

It seemed exciting. I loved the idea of meeting cool people all over the city, building these strong connections, and getting to see a company’s success grow because of my work felt rewarding.

6. What have you done in school or work that you are most proud of?

My job coming out of college was a Brand Manager for a start-up salad dressing company. In my first month there, the only other marketing person who was supposed to show me the ropes quit, and I was basically on my own without any idea what I was doing. I ended up helping the company not only grow, but we did an entire rebrand of the company. My biggest triumph there was planning and attending our attendance at Expo West, which is NA’s biggest trade show. It was a big hit.

7. In your opinion how important is teamwork in this field?

Teamwork is everything. A lot of the actual PR work is solo, but you should never send anything out without a second pair of eyes, and these days it’s all about connections and whom you know. The PR community is also one of the most heavily connected communities, especially in Toronto. Everyone here knows who people are and they all stay connected.
